Educated in law, he joined the African National Congress (ANC) and fought against apartheid. Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years but remained a symbol of resistance. Released in 1990, he led South Africa to its first democratic elections in 1994, becoming president. His administration focused on social programs and reconciliation. Mandela retired in 1999 but continued activism until his death in 2013, leaving a legacy of liberation and equality.
