Belgian King who wanted to obtain land in Congo. Between 1879 and 1882 gained control of land along the Congo River valley. Claimed that his primary motive in establishing the colony was to abolish the slave trade and promote Christianity. Fears of Belgian dominance and diminishing land led to the Berlin Conference of 1884.
