Trapeze Hangers

There are two reasons to install trapeze hangers. One is to install piping where there are no structural members. What is the other reason?

• To transfer loads to the building structure

• When ESFR sprinklers are used

• To transfer loads to the ceiling grid

Sprinkler Piping must be substantially supported from the building structure. What are the weight requirements applied at the point of hanging?

The hanger rods used to suspend the trapeze and suspended pipe must be sized properly. How are the hanger rod sizes selected?

• both hanger and suspended rods by size of pipe suspended

• by size of pipe used for trapeze, and size of pipe suspended.

Slippage of the trapeze hanger is a concern. What must be done to avoid slippage?

• following manufacturer's installation instructions

• adding seismic bracing

• using listed hanger components

• securing the trapeze member to the building structure

Pipe and Angle iron are two common trapeze hanger bar materials. Can strut and other metal sizes and shapes be used?

• Only strut can be used

• No other materials besides pipe and angle iron can be used

• Strut can be used, and other sizes and shapes, as long as sized properly using section modulus

• Other shapes and sizes may be used, but not strut

Bolts used for trapeze hangers must be provided with a flat washer and nut. What are the size requirements for holes for bolts through steel?

• Holes for bolts must not exceed 1/16" the diameter of the bolt

• Holes for bolts must not exceed 1/8" the diameter of the bolt

• Any hole is acceptable, as long as a flat washer is provided

• Holes for bolts must not exceed 1/4" the diameter of the bolt

An angle iron trapeze must be sized properly and secured to the building structure. What is another requirement for angle iron trapeze members?

• Must be painted with corrosion resistant paint

• Must be galvanized

• Installed with longer leg vertical

• Installed with shorter leg vertical

The section modulus value is used to size the trapeze member. This value can be reduced using a formula, and a smaller trapeze member can be used when:

• The structural members are bar joists

• The structural members are concrete

• Angle iron is used for a trapeze member

• The piping load is not centered between the structural members
