4
Gravitational energy
Energy of an object due to its position above the ground.
energy stored in bonds that bind atoms together
Chemical Energy
energy stored in an object due to a change in its shape
Elastic Energy
energy stored in the nucleus of an atom that is released when nuclei join together or split apart.
Nuclear Energy
5
Multiple Choice
The previous slide showed examples of what type of energy?
Kinetic Energy
Potential Energy
Celcius Energy Drink
Red bull energy
6
energy of motion, such as the motion of objects (examples: flowing water, wind, machines, your body when you move)
Mechanical Energy
energy of moving particles that make up matter (examples: energy that maintains your body's temperature, geothermal energy)
Thermal Energy
7
energy that travels as electromagnetic waves (examples: visible light, microwaves, x-rays...)
Radiant Energy
energy given off by vibrating objects; energy we can hear. Examples: voices, music
Sound Energy
energy of moving electrical charges (ex. lightning, electrons in a circuit)
Electrical Energy
8
Multiple Choice
All of the following are examples of Kinetic energy except...
mechanical energy
elastic energy
radiant energy
thermal energy
9
Multiple Select
Select all examples of potential energy.
Gravitational energy
chemical energy
elastic energy
nuclear energy
10
Energy can be transformed, or changed, from one form to another.
11
Green plants change radiant energy (light) to chemical energy.
Chemical Energy
A hair dryer changes electrical energy into heat and mechanical energy.
Electrical Energy
Examples of energy transformations
12
Potential to Mechanical Energy
Different forms of Potential energy can be changed into mechanical energy. Gravitational potential energy turns into mechanical energy as a roller coaster rolls downhill on its track. Elastic energy in a stretched spring is transformed into mechanical energy as the spring snaps back.
Stored chemical energy can be used to make things move, too. Gasoline burning in a car engine is stored chemical energy changed into thermal energy.
13
Multiple Choice
What energy transformation takes place after you release a rubber band?
elastic to mechanical
thermal to gravitational
sound to radiant
radiant to chemical
14
Energy Transformations in your body.
When you eat food, you take in chemical energy. Some of that energy is changed into mechanical energy to move your muscles. Some is changed into electrical energy that is used by your nervous system. Some of the chemical energy from the food you eat is transformed into thermal energy. This keeps your body at the right temperature. Your body stores some of the chemical energy to use later.
15
Multiple Choice
Green plants change radiant (light) energy into ________ energy that your body uses to move, regulate temperature and electrical energy for your nervous system.
thermal
chemical
radiant
gravitational
16
Transformations of Electrical Energy
Many devices transform electrical energy into other forms of energy.
- A lamp wire carries electrical energy to a light bulb
- A hair dryer changes electrical energy into heat and mechanical energy.
- Computers transform electrical energy into sound, light (radiant), and mechanical energy.
17
Conservation of Energy in Transformations
As you have learned, during many energy transformations, some energy changes to heat. When that heat is not useful or is even harmful, it is called waste heat. Waste heat is still energy. Remember, energy is neither created nor destroyed - it simply changes forms.
18
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is a form of potential energy?
sound
chemical
thermal
mechanical
19
Multiple Choice
You learned that a motor uses the magnetic field produced by an electric current to spin an armature. What kind of transformation takes place inside a motor?
chemical energy transforms to magnetic energy.
thermal energy to electrical energy
gravitational energy to chemical energy
electrical energy to mechanical energy
20
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is the best example of a form of kinetic energy being transformed into a form of potential energy?
Photosynthesis - plants use light to make sugar
combustion of fuel being broken down chemically to produce heat and light
in a generator, an armature spinning in a magnetic field produces electric current.
in a battery, a chemical reaction releases electrons that can flow as electric current.
21
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is not a source of stored chemical energy that can be turned into a form of kinetic energy?
a battery in a toy car
food
the nucleus of an atom
fossil fuels
