In 2016, a Dutch doctor was acquitted for euthanizing an Alzheimer patient without explicit consent, marking a first in the Netherlands, where euthanasia was legalized in 2002. The court ruled that discussing euthanasia with the deeply demented patient was unnecessary and could cause distress. Dutch law allows euthanasia under strict conditions, requiring certification from two doctors that the patient's suffering is unbearable with no hope of improvement. In 2018, over 6,000 people opted for euthanasia in the Netherlands, accounting for 4% of deaths.
