Japan is developing an indigenous next-generation fighter jet, tentatively called the F3, to replace the Mitsubishi F2 and counter China's J20. The F3 will be optimized for air dominance, stealth, and interoperability with the US military. It is expected to carry advanced weaponry, including cruise missiles, and have a longer operational range. The cost of the F3 may exceed that of the F22 due to Japan's unique defense procurement requirements. Despite high costs, Japan is set to become the largest customer of the F35 program outside the US, with plans to purchase 105 F35s and operate 157, including F35B variants.
