Joseph Smith, born in Vermont, was influenced by the Second Great Awakening and began experiencing religious visions. He claimed an angel guided him to ancient texts, leading to the creation of the Book of Mormon. Smith founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but faced opposition due to his radical teachings, including polygamy. Persecution followed, and Smith was eventually murdered. Despite this, the LDS Church grew and now has millions of members worldwide.
