The freighter Absa Roca, carrying lumber, narrowly survived a torpedo attack off the Pacific Coast. The wood cargo prevented the ship from breaking apart. Meanwhile, survivors from the torpedoed Canadian liner Lady Hawkins, including a young girl named Janet Johnson, were rescued after spending five days in a lifeboat. Over 200 people are missing from the sinking, but Janet's survival is seen as miraculous.
