VOICED : Mexico detuvo a 20.000 ninos y adolescentes migrantes en 2015

In 2015, Mexico detained over 20,000 migrant minors, mostly from Central America, as they crossed the country without adult accompaniment. This number nearly doubled from the previous year, raising concerns from the National Human Rights Commission. These minors are often held in migration stations without immediate placement in care centers, lacking the necessary assistance and protection. Over 90% of these children come from the Northern Triangle of Central America—El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. While in Mexican migration centers, many minors face threats such as theft, extortion, kidnapping, and sexual assault, sometimes even by corrupt authorities. These children migrate to reunite with their families in the U.S. or to escape poverty and violence in their home countries.
