In the early 1800s, Jorgensen, a British subject, attempted to trade with Iceland, a Danish territory, during a time of war between Britain and Denmark. After being denied, he declared himself the protector of Iceland, promising democracy. His actions led to his arrest by the British, and he spent much of his life in and out of prison, with a brief period as a spy near the Battle of Waterloo.
