The nation was divided between the Shogun's supporters and those advocating for Sonno Joi, which called for revering the emperor and expelling foreigners. The Shogun established the Shinsengumi to suppress Ronin causing unrest in Kyoto. The Shinsengumi's actions, including brutal interrogations and attacks, were pivotal in maintaining order. These events left historical marks, visible even today.
