The volcanic eruption of Cumbre Vieja on La Palma, Canary Islands, has led to the confinement of 33,000 residents due to toxic gases. This represents 38% of the island's population. The regional government initially ordered confinement due to poor air quality from sulfur dioxide emissions, but lifted it as conditions improved. The eruption, which began on September 19, is the first in 50 years on the island, causing significant damage and the evacuation of over 7,000 people. It is the longest eruption in the island's history, following those of San Juan in 1949 and Teneguía in 1971.
