President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador issued a warning to parents to dissuade their children from joining gangs, highlighting the severe consequences such as imprisonment or death. He shared a video on Twitter showing the harsh conditions faced by gang members in prison following a state of exception approved by Congress. This state of exception restricts civil liberties and expands police and military powers in response to a violent weekend with nearly 90 deaths. The government also reformed the Penal Code, increasing the maximum prison sentence for gang membership from 9 to 45 years. El Salvador ended 2021 with a homicide rate of 18 per 100,000 inhabitants.
