Italian ambassador died in gun battle in Democratic Republic of Congo

On February 22, 2021, a World Food Program convoy was ambushed near Goma, close to the Rwanda border. The convoy, en route to a school feeding program, was attacked by six armed assailants. They forced the convoy to stop and took hostages, including WFP workers, the Italian ambassador, and his bodyguard. A gun battle ensued when the DRC Army and park rangers responded. The ambassador and his bodyguard were shot, with the bodyguard dying at the scene and the ambassador dying en route to the hospital.
