Lightning can occur during thunderstorms, sandstorms, or volcanic eruptions. A typical lightning bolt carries a current of tens of thousands of amps in a fraction of a second, heating the air it passes through to 20000 °C. This rapid heating creates a shockwave, which we perceive as thunder.
