FBI tricked international cartels into using ‘encrypted’ phones

In 2018, a convicted smuggler offered the FBI a way to infiltrate encrypted communications of international crime groups in exchange for a reduced sentence. He developed Anom, a secure mobile device used by criminals worldwide. The device required new users to be vouched for, adding trust. Within three years, Anom was used in 90 countries for illicit activities, while the FBI monitored the communications.
