Temperate grasslands, also known as prairies or plains, are vast areas of unbroken grassland with a cold season. They are found in North America, Russia, Hungary, South America, and Africa. These biomes have nutrient-rich soils and are dominated by herbaceous vegetation. Originally home to large herds of bison, many grasslands have been converted to agricultural land, leading to a loss of biodiversity. The climate features periodic droughts and fires, which play a role in maintaining the ecosystem. Human activities have significantly altered these landscapes, replacing diverse species with monocultures.
