In Syria, rebels released several Greek Orthodox nuns after four months of captivity. The release was part of a negotiation where Syrian authorities agreed to free dozens of detained women. This rare agreement between Syrian authorities and rebels involved a convoy transporting the nuns to safety. The exchange was overseen by Lebanese security chief Abbas Ibrahim. The nuns, primarily Syrian and Lebanese, were abducted by rebels, including members of the Al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, from a convent in Maloula in December. They worked in the convent's orphanage.
