Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy body tissue. There are over 80 types, affecting various organs and systems. Women of childbearing age are at higher risk. Causes are not well understood but may involve genetic factors. The immune system's failure to distinguish between healthy tissue and antigens leads to the production of autoantibodies. Rheumatoid arthritis, the most common autoimmune disease, affects joint linings, causing pain and deformity. Thyroiditis and lupus are other examples, with lupus affecting multiple body systems. Autoimmune diseases are a leading cause of death in females under 65.
