Annaleise James, born in 1886, was the first African American woman licensed as a pharmacist in Connecticut. Her father escaped slavery, and her family settled in Connecticut. Anna graduated from Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1908. She worked at her brother-in-law's pharmacy in Saybrook, eventually taking over and renaming it James's Pharmacy. She ran it until her retirement in 1967, living above the pharmacy until her death in 1977.
