Let's put some ground　土 on top of the measure　寸. The temple normally did those measuring things. This means "temple" and is pronounced　てら or じ

Let's put the sun 日　next to the temple　寺. Temples were in charge of "measuring" where the sun was in the sky. So this means either time or "o'clock" and is pronounced とき or じ
