Understanding Fractions

A proper fraction is a fraction where the numerator (top number) is less than the denominator (bottom number). It is less than 1.

An improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is equal to or greater than the denominator. It is equal to or more than 1.

A mixed number (or mixed fraction) is a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction.

Similar fractions are fractions that have the same denominator (bottom number).

Dissimilar fractions are fractions with different denominators.
