Understanding Makato's Story

Makato was an orphan, for his father and mother had died when he was very young.

• A child who is rich

The old woman’s husband was one of PraRuang’s mahouts, which meant that he helped look after the hundreds of elephants that the king owned.

• An elephant caretaker

• A farmer

• A warrior

A tall young man in a splendid costume, followed by attendants, came in. It was PraRuang himself.

• Plain and simple

• Dark and scary

• Magnificent and impressive

“How old is he?” the king asked. “Twelve years old, Your Majesty.”

• A servant

• A royal title for a king or queen

• A soldier

Makato went away happily, clutching the seeds in his hand.

• Dropping

• Holding tightly

• Throwing

“How could you do that?” asked the puzzled king.

• Happy and excited

• Angry and upset

• Confused and unsure

Makato, who had once been a poor orphan, became the king of a prosperous kingdom.

• Successful and wealthy

• Weak and powerless
