Nail Anatomy

This is part of the epidermis and dermis found under the nail and it provides movement.

Epidermis falp over top of the nail body to prevent bacteria from entering the nail root.

layer of corneum cells that lays on top of the nail body close to the root. This provides protection to the nail root.

Epidermis flap over the lateral portions of the nail bed to provide protection to the nail body.

Epidermis directly underneath the free nail edge to prevent bacteria entering under the nail bed.

Dead cells of the nail that are no longer attached to the body.

Part of the nail made up of dead cells attached to the body; moves along with the nail bed and is undergoing kertainzation.

Portion of the nail underneath the skin but is made up of dead cells that are undergoing keratinization

Portion of the nail underneath the skin that where is where mitosis takes place to create new cells. This is the living portion of the nail.
