3D Modeling Terminology

Bevel/Chamfer

• Create a rounded edge on a 3D solid object.

• Create an angled face between the adjacent faces of a 3D solid object.

• Create a flat surface on a 3D solid object.

• Create a textured surface on a 3D solid object.

Polygon

• A closed figure with straight lines and vertices.

• A three-dimensional shape with curved surfaces.

• A type of angle measurement in geometry.

• A line segment that connects two points.

Tri

• A three-sided polygon that has exactly three vertices that are connected by edges.

• A four-sided polygon with equal sides.

• A two-dimensional shape with no sides.

• A three-dimensional shape with three faces.

Snap

• Designate a fixed increment for transformations.

• Create a random transformation effect.

• Apply a continuous transformation without limits.

• Set a variable increment for transformations.

Select and Move

• Change the location of an object, line, or vertex along one or more axes.

• Rotate an object around a fixed point.

• Scale an object to increase or decrease its size.

• Duplicate an object to create a copy.

Axis

• A finite line representing two dimensions in 3D space.

• An infinite line representing one dimension in 3D space.

• A point representing zero dimensions in 3D space.

• A surface representing two dimensions in 3D space.

Offset/Inset

• Create and scale a connected copy of all edges along the plane of a face.

• Remove all edges from the plane of a face.

• Duplicate the face without scaling it.

• Create a new face parallel to the original face.

Scale

• Size and position of objects relative to each other or to the design space.

• The measurement of an object's weight in relation to its size.

• The process of enlarging or reducing an image without losing quality.

• A method for determining the color palette of a design.

Cut/Multicut

• Create additional edges that divide a face into multiple faces.

• Remove edges to simplify a shape.

• Merge multiple faces into a single face.

• Add vertices to create a more complex shape.

World orientation

• Coordinate planes are aligned with the design space.

• Coordinate planes are misaligned with the design space.

• Coordinate planes are irrelevant to the design space.

• Coordinate planes are only used in 3D modeling.
