Comprehension Strategies

If a reader is using the strategy of clarifying, he or she is 

• making mental images of what is happening in the text

• connecting to what he/she already knows

• stopping when he/she is confused to reread

• predicting what will happen next

Things readers can do when CLARIFYING include all of the following EXCEPT

• read the text at a faster rate

• go back and reread part of the text

• adjust your reading rate to go slower

• use context clues to help figure out tricky words

An inference is...

• text evidence + what you know.

• retelling details from the text.

• making a guess without evidence.
