Prepositions are small words with big jobs: they tell you where, when or how something happened. They relate a noun or pronoun to another word in the sentence.

A prepositional phrase is a group of words that starts with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun. The noun or pronoun is called the object of the preposition.

Prepositions are often hard to define on their own. Imagine trying to explain the meaning of the word “out” or “between.” You can’t really explain what those words mean without explaining how they relate to space or time. Looking for words that point to where, how or when something happens is a good way to identify which words are prepositions.
