15 mins • 5 pts

A mindful physician orders 3 g of BugZilla, an antibiotic, to be placed in 750 mL of D10W. Your pharmacy IV bags include conventional overfill. BugZilla is available as a 700 mg per 3.6 mL injection. How many mL of BugZilla are required to prepare the prescription? Answer to the nearest tenth.

Answer explanation

700mg/3.6 ml = 3000g/x ml

Cross multiply to find answer. In this problem, we do not need to worry about overfill.

FILL IN THE BLANK QUESTION

15 mins • 5 pts

  1. A demure physician orders 63 mg of MicroMenace to be administered IV in 1250 mL of LR over a 12 hour period. In preparing the order you use MicroMenace 46 mg in 2.8 mL and your IV bag contains conventional overfill. What infusion rate in mL/min should the patient receive.  Answer to the nearest tenth mL/min.

Answer explanation

Need to add up all the total mls in the bag. Remember conventional overfill is 10% of the bag.

(63 mg * 2.8 ml)/46 mg = 3.834782609 ml of drug

1250 ml + 125 ml + 3.834782609 ml = 1378.834783 ml /(12 hours *60 mins/hr) = 1.9 ml/min
