The Legend of Toba Lake

Once upon a time, in North Sumatra, there lived a young farmer named Toba. One day, while fishing in the river, he caught a giant fish. To his surprise, the fish could talk and asked Toba to let it go. In return, the fish promised to transform into a beautiful woman named Samosir, and they eventually got married.

Samosir agreed to marry Toba under one condition: he should never tell anyone that she had been a fish. They lived happily and had a son named Samosir, like his mother. One day, Toba got angry with his son and, forgetting his promise, shouted that Samosir was the son of a fish. Hearing this, Samosir was deeply hurt. She took her son and returned to the river. Suddenly, the sky turned dark, and it started raining heavily. The valley where Toba lived became filled with water, forming a lake which is now known as Lake Toba. The island in the middle of the lake is named Samosir Island
