A long time ago, there were two animals, Sura and Baya. Sura was the name of a shark and Baya was a crocodile. They lived in a sea.

 

Once Sura and Baya were looking for some food. Suddenly, Baya saw a goat “Yummy, this is my lunch,” said Baya. “No way! This is my lunch. You are greedy” said Sura. Then they fought for the goat. After several hours, they were very tired.

 

Feeling tired of fighting, they lived in the different places. Sura lived in the water and Baya lived in the land. The border was the beach, so they would never fight again.

One day, Sura went to the land and looked for some food in the river. He was very hungry and there was not much food in the sea. Baya was very angry when he knew that Sura broke the promise. They fought again.

 

They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya’s tail. Baya did the same thing to Sura. He bit very hard until Sura finally gave up and went back to the sea. Baya was happy.

 

People always talked about the fought between Sura and Baya. They name the place of the fought as Surabaya. People also put their fought as the symbol as Surabaya City. What is the text about?

On a hill in area of Borneo, there lived a poor widow and her daughter. The girl was really beautiful. However, she was very lazy and spoiled. She loved to dress up every day, but never helped her mother.

 

One day, they went down to a market in a village for shopping.  The girl got dressed very nice and walked in front of her mother because she was ashamed of her mother. While the widow walked behind and wore dirty clothes. While entering the village, some young men were so fascinated by the girl’s beauty. However, she was in contrast to the woman walking behind her. Some young men asked her whether the woman who walked behind her was her mother. But the girl arrogantly replied that she was her maid. More people asked her along the way to the market. She gave a same answer that the widow was her maid.

 

The mother’s heart hurt to hear her daughter’s answer. She prayed to God to punish her ungodly daughter. Suddenly, there was a thunder and a lightning and the girl slowly turned into a stone. She cried and apologized to his mother. But it was too late. She was turned into a stone. It’s called A Crying Stone.

Why did not the girl tell the truth about her mother to the young men?

On the day of the competition, those princes shot their arrows. All of them did it perfectly. The king found it difficult to choose. Therefore, the princes began to fight and kill each other. Princess Mandalika was so desperate. She didn’t want anyone killing each other because of her. That’s why she decided to jump to a sea. She died in the south sea of Lombok. The king and the princes were sad and felt guilty. They regretted and stopped fighting.

 

Until now, one day in every year usually in February or March, people go to the south sea. On that day, a great number of worms come out from the sea. People call those worms nyale. People believe that those nyales are Princess Mandalika’s hair.

A long time ago, there was a kingdom in West Java. The king was wise and kind-hearted. Unfortunately, he hadn’t had any children yet. Wanting to have a child, the king went to the forest and prayed to God. God granted his wish. A few months later, the queen got pregnant.  When the baby girl was born, people welcomed happily. Day by day, the princess grew more and more beautiful. The king and the queen spoiled her too much. It made the princess had a bad temper. Before her seventeenth birthday, many people gave her beautiful present. The king took some gold and jewels. He asked a goldsmith to make a beautiful necklace for the princess.

 

On the princess birthday, people gathered in the courtyard. “My beloved daughter, I give this necklace to you. People in this kingdom love you so much. It is a gift from them, “said the king. The princess looked at it briefly. “I don’t want it. It’s ugly,” she answered. Then, she threw it away. Everybody was speechless. They didn’t believe that the princess would do so a cruel thing to hurt everybody’s feelings.

 

The queen and the people were sad. They began crying. Then there was a miracle. The earth was crying, too. The water drowned all over the kingdom to be a lake. People called the lake “Telaga Warna”. On a bright day, it is full colors from the shadows of forest, plants, flowers, and sky around the lake. However, some people said the shadows are from pieces of princess necklace which are scattered at bottom of the lake. Why did the princess have a bad temper?
