Brian is panicked and helpless.

Brian faces two choices to land the plane. He can wait for the plane to run out of fuel and fall, or he can push the throttle in and try to land it. How does he assess those choices, and which choice does he make?

Even though he knows the plane is probably flying further and further off-course every minute, he cannot bring himself to make the plane go down. He is afraid of what will happen and wants to hold on to his relative safety in the still-flying plane. He eventually finds an L-shaped lake and lands the plane.

Even though he knows there is no way he can land the plane and will probably die like the pilot, he decides to land in a cluster of soft pine trees. He figures that he has a better chance to land the plane on land because he fears drowning in the lake. He eventually lands in the lake and surprisingly, survives.

Why does Brian remind himself of his name, age, and situation? What other facts does he try to provide?

He is trying to make sense of his situation and get a grip on reality. He is also trying to describe the events that led to his situation, to determine what is going to happen, and to figure out when he will be found.

He is trying to remember his identity because he suffered partial memory loss due to a head injury which occurred during the crash landing. He is trying to to determine what is going to happen, and to figure out when he will be found.

Why does Brian feel that he is lucky to discover the rock overhang?

The overhang provides a shelter that is stronger than a lean-to and is watertight, because of the stone roof. It also offers a sand beach leading down to the water.

The overhang provides safety from animals, insects and other pests. Furthermore, the overhang will maintain a constant temperature of 70 degrees. He is 100% safe there!
