Cylinder Reconditioning

A scored cylinder:

• must be replaced

• can be reconditioned

• cand be used as is

• none of these are correct

An inside micrometer is used:

• to determine if the cylinder is scored

• to measure the wear in the cylinder

• to see if the old piston rings will fit the new cylinder

• all of these are correct

The hone used to recondition the cylinder:

• is driven with a T-handle pilot

• is driven by a slow-speed electric drill or drill press

• is turned by hand

• does not turn

When you start to recondition the cylinder, you should keep the hone moving near the bottom of the cylinder because:

• the bottom does not wear and will guide the hone as you straighten the cylinder

• the bottom wears most and requires more honing

• it romeoves the ridge at the bottom

• it creates the desired crosshatch finish

While honing, you must check the bore size frequently because:

• the cylinder heats up

• the hone wears out

• it's easy to hone oversize

• you can practice reading the micrometer

Before making the final size:

• make sure you have a crosshatch on the cylinder walls

• allow the cylinder to cool down

• turn the hone off

• release all pressure from the hone

The required piston clearance for a reconditioned cylinder:

• is .004" to .006"

• increases as the cylinder is honed to the next oversize

• exceeds .035"

• is not critical as long as the cylinder is not tapered

The piston pin is inserted through the bores in the piston and rod and is held in place by:

• the piston rings

• screws

• pin locks

• nothing, as it is a full floating pin

A ring expander is used:

• to check the ring cross-sections

• to assemble the rings onto the piston

• to check the end gaps on the rings

• to determine the direction of assembly

The last ring to be installed is:

• the top ring

• the bottom ring

• they can be installed in any order

• the oil ring
