Argumentative Terminology

What is an argument?

• when the author expresses his or her belief and uses reasons and evidence to support it

• Information that gives history of the issue to help the reader better understand

• A rebuttal statement from someone who believes differently than the author

Introduction

• Wraps up the essay in a satisfying way and leaves the reader thinking about the author's claim.

• States a supporting reason for the thesis and provides statistical evidence.

• Present the topic, provide background, and state the claim and reasons
