In March 2001, an amazing place was opened in the south-west of England. Known as the Eden Project, it has become one of the most famous attractions in the country. So far, it has been visited by over 20 million people. So, what is it? The Eden Project is a botanic garden. It consists of two gigantic greenhouses, called biomes, and a large outside garden. The Tropical Biome is 55 metres high and 200 metres long. This is the biggest greenhouse in the world and home to over 1,000 types of tropical plants, including banana, coffee and bamboo plants. Many of these plants have been grown from seeds! The second biome, called the Mediterranean Biome, is a bit smaller, but it is just as amazing because it recreates a climate characteristic of hot and dry areas. It contains as many types of plants as the Tropical Biome, for example, olive, citrus fruit and cocoa trees. However, the Eden Project is not just a botanic garden, but also a modern education centre. There are film shows, exhibitions, interactive displays with touch screens, and even a lab where visitors can do some experiments and use microscopes.
