What are fossils ?

Fossils give clues about the availability of plants and the climate when they lived.

The word fossil comes from the Latin word fossilis, which means "dug up." Fossils are the remains of ancient animals and plants, traces or impressions of living things from the past. The fossil of a bone doesn't have any bone in it! A fossilized object has the same shape as the original object, but is chemically more like a rock.

What is the formation of fossils ?

Most fossils are found in the layers of sedimentary rocks

Over long periods of time, small pieces of debris of animals and plants are compressed (squeezed) as they get buried under more and more layers of sediment

Eventually, they are compressed into sedimentary rock

Fossils are also helpful in showing the missing links between the different species
