What is a bleed?

• A printed image that extends to the very edges of a page.
• An image that is fringed with a red colour
• A graphic feature such as a button

What is a callout?

• The central image or subject strikes a pose which suggests they are calling or shouting out to the audience.
• The callout aims to tease the audience to turn inside; often a short piece of text set in larger type than the rest of the page to attract attention
• The visual look of a product's logo or other printed material that can be used to lead satisfied customers to purchase other products bearing the same marks.
  

What is a caption?

• Short copy below – or close to - a photograph that describes what is taking place and/or identifies the people in the picture.
• The visual look of a product's logo or other printed material that can be used to lead satisfied customers to purchase other products bearing the same marks.
  
• Seen as an introductory headline below the masthead describing the magazine.

What is the masthead?

• Text normally on the left hand side of the front cover.
  
• The title of magazine presented in a recognisable typography/font 
• The first letter of the article which is in a larger/different/elaborate font.
  

What are buzzwords? 

• Words or phrases used to engage a reader’s interest in a story by making it sound exciting/valuable e.g. ‘Exclusive’, ‘Sensational’,
• Words or phrases which express negative connotations designed to make subjects seem menacing.
• Words and phrases which are onamatpoeic

What is a house style?

• The essential articles which are inside the magazine and are stated through sell lines.
• Quotes above the
  main cover line which connote the
  personal feel of the double page
  spread
• Is the overall look and representation associated
  with a product. 

What is a direct mode of address?

• Forthright and assertive language used to communicate frankly
• The model/subject looks directly at the audience, or the writing speaks to ‘you’ or 'we'.
• The model looks away, or the writing refers to ‘people’ or ‘the public’.

What are banners and graphics?

• Seen as an introductory headline below the masthead describing the magazine.
• The visual look of a product's logo or other printed material that can be used to lead satisfied customers to purchase other products bearing the same marks.
• Graphic features (e.g buttons, blocks, skylines)
  used to draw attention
  and plug features of the
  magazine. 

What is a strapline/tagline?

• The title used by known typography to make the readers become familiar with what magazine they are reading.
• An introductory headline below the masthead describing the magazine- like a slogan.
• Text normally on the left hand side of the front cover.
  

What are cover lines?

• Headlines which act as a plug to
  articles in the magazine in
  order to tempt readers to
  purchase the magazine.
• Lines and graphics which ornament the cover and draw attention to content inside
• Cover images used to
  attract the target
  audience
