Calculating Speed, Velocity and Acceleration
2
Learning Target
I can define the terms speed, velocity and acceleration.
I can determine the speed, velocity and acceleration of objects in motion.
3
Poll
Are speed and velocity the same?
Yes!
No!
I am really not sure
4
Speed is a scalar quantity.
Speed is how fast an object is moving.
A storm moving at 75 km/hr

What is speed?
5
Distance travelled is measured in meters (m).
Time taken is measured in seconds (s).
Speed is measured in meters per second (m/s).
The standard unit for speed in physics is m/s, but other units such as kilometers per hour (km/h) are more convenient when measuring the speed of vehicles . Why is this?
the speed of an object can be calculated using this equation:
How is speed calculated?

9
Fill in the Blank
How long does a horse take to run a distance of 6 miles at 16 miles/hour?
10
Velocity is a vector quantity.
Velocity is how fast an object is moving in a certain direction.
Ex. a storm moving at 75 km/hr towards east

What is velocity?
