Light & Sound Unit Test Review

By Nicole Channin

2

Use the following problem to answer questions 1 -4 .

As Jesse climbed out of bed, he looked into the mirror. He then walked over to the window where the sunlight was shining through the curtains. He knew the sun had already come up for the day. As he pulled open the curtain, he realized it had been raining and there was a beautiful rainbow displayed in the sky.

3

Multiple Choice

  1. Which of the following describes what Jesse was looking at when he looked into the mirror?

1

The light in the room was being reflected off of the glass mirror allowing Jesse to clearly see himself.

2

The light in the roon was being refracted off of the glass mirror allowing Jesse to clearly see himself.

3

The light in the room was being reflected off of Jesse allowing him to see himself clearly in the mirror.

4

The light in the room was being refracted off of Jesse allowing him to see hiimself clearly in the mirror.

4

Multiple Choice

  1. How would you describe the curtains in Jesse's room?

1

The curtains are opaque because he could not see anything through them and did not know it had been raining and there was a rainbow.

2

The curtains are translucent because he could see through them, but not clearly enough to see that it had rained and there was a rainbow.

3

The curtains are transparent because he could see clearly through them and knew it had been raining and there was a rainbow.

4

The curtains are heavy, because he could not see through them and did not see that it had been raining and there was a rainbow.

5

Multiple Choice

  1. Jesse noticied a rainbow in the sky. Using what you know about the water cycle from previous units, what were the droplets in the clouds acting like?

1

The water droplets are acting like sound because they are traveling in waves.

2

The water droplets are acting like light because they are traveling in a straight line.

3

The water droplets are acting like a prism because they are separating the white light into different colors.

4

The water is acting like a woodwind instrument because it is vibrating to make a sound.

6

Multiple Choice

  1. What would happen in the air if Jesse decided to turn on the radio?

1

Small vibrations of sound would travel through the air.

2

The air would become cold.

3

The sound would not travel because air is empty space.

4

The pitch of the music would change.

7

  1. Think back to question 4. If Jesse left the house with the radion still on, would it still make a noise even though he wasn't there to hear it?

The answer I am looking for:

Yes, the sound waves would still travel through the air.

8

Multiple Select

  1. Choose 3 statements that are true about light:

1

Light is a form of energy.

2

Light comes from a source.

3

Light travels in a straight line.

4

Light is transmitted by a medium.

9

  1. Define the word and give an example.

Translucent objects: Some light passes through the object but NOT all.

Example: sunglasses

10

  1. Define the word and give an example.

Transparent objects: Light passes all the way through the object.

Example: glass window

11

  1. Define the word and give an example.

Opaque objects: Absorbs or reflects light. No light passes through the object.

Example: book

12

Multiple Choice

  1. A prism refracts light. What is it actually doing to the light?

1

The prism is speeding the light up causing it to change how fast it is moving.

2

The prism is bending the light causing it to separate into different colors.

3

The prism is reflecting the light causing it to bounce back from the surface of the prism.

4

The prism is absorbing all the light causing no light to pass through.

13

Multiple Choice

  1. If you were floating around in space with no space suit and screamed very loudly, would anyone be able to hear you?

1

Yes, because you would be right next to them.

2

Yes, because sound travels through space.

3

No, because it would be too loud to hear you.

4

No, because the sound must travel through a medium.

14

Multiple Choice

  1. What three mediums are used to communicate sound?

1

water, wind, earth

2

blue, red, yellow

3

watercolors, pastels, oil paints

4

solid, liquid, gas

15

Multiple Choice

  1. Jasmine put the following statement on her test: "You can alter (change) the pitch of a sound by hitting the object harder or softer." What evidence would you use to prove to Jasmine that she is not correct?

1

Jasmine is correct.

2

Pitch is determined by the size of the object being hit as well as the vibration made by the object.

3

You don't hit percussion instruments.

4

Woodwind instruments make noise when the musician blows air through the instrument.
