Estimating Irrational Numbers- Part 1

Objective: I can estimate irrational numbers by approximating their location on a number line or by truncating their decimal expansions.

Ensure that you are watching the video before moving on.

Steps to estimate

First- Find the perfect square roots that is number you are looking for is between.

Second- See which root the number is closest to.

Last- Estimate which root the number is.

Example

Estimate the square root of 15

First- The square root of 15 is between. The square roots will be 9 and 16.

Second- Which number is the square root closest to. The square root is closer to 16

Third- Find the perfect square. The square root is 16 is 4 , so the square root is 15 is approximately 4.
