Telling the time is the ability to read from a clock the time of day or night in units of hours, minutes and seconds.

Where the hour hand is, is the hour of day/night it is. For example, if the hour hand was on the 6, it would be 6 o‘clock. If it is between a number, you would put the number less as the hour, as the hour hasn’t passed to the next yet

The minute hand is a little bit different to the hour hand. Instead of counting the number shown on the clock, we multiply that number by 5 for the amount of minutes.

There aren’t 12 minutes in an hour, but there are 60 minutes, with 12 x 5 being 60. So an easy way to remember how many minutes have past since the last hour, is to look at the number it is on and multiply by 5.

As well as writing time as the hours and minutes, time is also referred to how much past or to the nearest hour it is. You may have heard the terms “half past” “quarter past” and “quarter to”, If you look at the image, you can see half of the clock highlighted red and blue. The half highlighted in red is the past side, as the closest hour is the one that just passed. The blue side, is the to side, as the closest hour, is the next hour. However, we won’t say 35 minutes too a time if the minute hand was on 7. Instead, we would say 25 minutes to whatever the next hour was. If you feel stuck with the to side, look at the number opposite (for example, 11 and 1). If the minute hand was on 11, it would be hour:55, or 5 minutes to whatever the next hour was going to be.
