Standard and Essential questions

Standard - CC.2.1.5.B.1 Apply place value to show an understanding of operations and rounding as they pertain to whole numbers and decimals.

Essential Questions

·   How can we relate exponents to the grouping of numbers?

·   How does understanding the powers of 10 help us determine where the decimal point goes in a product or quotient?

2

Objectives

  1. denote powers of 10 using whole number exponents.

  1. Explain patterns in the number of zeros in a product or quotient when multiplying or dividing by a power of ten.

3

Let's look at the following expressions

1 x 10 =

1 x 10 x 10 =

1 x 10 x 10 x 10 =

1 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 =

What are two different ways we can rewrite 10610^6 ?

5

What happens when we divide?

6

Multiplying by Power of 10

When you multiply any whole number by a power of 10 (10, 100, 100 or 101, 102 , 103 ) You add the amount of zeros you see or the amount of zeros that the exponent shows. Also you can place your decimal and move it that many places to the right. When you multiply a power of 10 by a decimal you move the decimal to the right depending on the number of zeros you have or by the exponent that is shown.

7

Dividing by Powers of 10

When dividing a whole number or a decimal by a power of 10 you add and move your decimal to to the left based on the number of zeros you see or based off the exponent you see.
