Do Now
Look at the image showing how energy from coal can provide electricity to light a light bulb.
Coal is a fossil fuel and a natural energy resource we use. Miners dig up coal through tunnels
in the ground. A power plant converts that coal into an energy source. There are many
advantages and disadvantages to using coal. What is one advantage and one disadvantage?

role of energy resources and how
conservation of natural resources
impact the environment and modern life.

7
Multiple Choice
Why is water a renewable resource instead of non-renewable?
It is constantly replaced.
It is important to all life.
It can be frozen into ice.
It evaporates into the air.

Conservation of Resources
Material
How we use it
Ways to use less
Ex. Water in restroom sink
Washing my hands
Turn off the water while not
in use
Look for different examples of how
energy is used and what ways
humans can use less of it.

8
Conservation of Energy
To conserve means to save or use less.
When we conserve resources, we reuse the amount being taken from
nature.
The more we conserve natural resources, the longer we will have them
in the future.
13
9
Conservation of Energy
Natural resources can last longer by practicing conservation.
Conservation is the work of protecting and managing our natural
resources.
There are three important ways to conserve resources:
•
reducing how much you use
•
reusing resources
•
recycling resources
Conservationists, like forest rangers, are people who work to preserve
things in nature. They protect wild animals, plants, and work to protect
their habitats for the future.

Saving Earth’s Resources
What are ways to conserve natural resources?
15
11
How does conservation
of natural resources
impact the
environment and
modern life?
Let’s revisit the phenomenon
When we save resources like water, electricity, and fuel, we create less pollution.
What does this mean?
When we use resources carefully, we leave more for nature.
How does this help protect forests, oceans, and the homes of animals?
Many things we use, like oil and coal, are limited—they can run out if we’re not
careful. What are the benefits of conserving these resources?
When we conserve energy, people start thinking of better ways to do things—like
inventing cars that run on electricity instead of gas, or homes that use less energy.
How could this help people save money and protect the planet at the same
time?
16
Natural Resources
Resources that can be
found in nature and are
used by people, such as
sunlight, air, water,
plants, and animals
17
Renewable Resources
Resources such as
wood, water, or plants
that can be replenished
naturally over time
18
Nonrenewable Resources
Resources, such as
fossil fuels, that cannot
be replaced after they
are used
19

To use less of
something.

Conservation
A city is expanding its energy needs and must choose between building a coal power
plant or investing in solar energy farms. The city council is concerned about air pollution
and wants a long-term energy solution.
What would be the most environmentally sustainable choice for the city, and why?
A.
Coal power plant because it can produce more energy consistently.
B.
Solar energy farm because it produces renewable energy without air pollution.
C.
Coal power plant because it is cheaper and quicker to build.
D.
Both options are equally sustainable as they provide energy.

Conservation
A school is teaching students about water conservation. They want students to
understand how water waste affects energy use in their community.
How does reducing water waste help conserve energy?
A.
Reducing water waste has no impact on energy use.
B.
Only saving hot water reduces energy, so cold water conservation doesn’t matter.
C.
It saves water resources but increases energy consumption.
D.
Less water waste means less energy is needed to treat, pump, and heat water,
conserving resources and reducing pollution.
