How is thermal energy transferred
by conduction?
The transfer of thermal
energy between objects
through direct contact is
called conduction.
Substances that thermal
energy can move through
quickly are called thermal
conductors.
Substances that thermal
energy cannot move
through are called
thermal insulators.

How is thermal energy transferred
by convection?
Convection is a type of thermal
energy transfer in which currents
carry thermal energy from one part of
a fluid to another.
Warmer, less-dense material
rises. Then it sinks as it cools and
becomes more dense.
In the lava lamp, wax rises and falls
as it gains energy from the warm bulb
and falls as it loses thermal energy.

How is thermal energy transferred by
radiation?
Being warmed by sunlight is an example of thermal energy transfer
by means of radiation, or electromagnetic waves.
Radiation can transfer energy through millions of miles of empty
space, since matter is not required for the energy to be transferred.
