Initially, the cliff face stood further out to sea, with fossils buried deep within the rock. Over time, wave action at the "wave attack zone," between high and low tide marks, caused the cliff to retreat. Cracks formed in the upper part of the cliff, leading to instability and collapse.
As the erosion continued, the cliff moved inland, and the lower sections eroded away, revealing the fossils. The diagram also shows a sloping rocky platform at the cliff's base, where eroded materials and fossils are eventually deposited.
