How many hours do your
washer & dryer run each day?
7
So how much energy does it use?
Here’s how to find out.
1. Find your appliance
1. Estimate how long you use it each day
1. Find the wattage
1. Use this formula to find your daily usage
(Wattage × Hours Used Per Day) ÷ 1000 = Daily Kilowatt-hour (kWh) consumption
5. Use this formula to find your annual usage
Daily kWh consumption × number of days used per year = annual energy consumption
Let’s try it together
8
So how much energy does it use?
Here’s how to find out.
1. Let’s use this office fridge.
1. It’s always plugged in.
1. The wattage is about 55 watts.
1. Daily Usage
(Wattage × Hours Used Per Day) ÷ 1000 = Daily Kilowatt-hour (kWh)
5. Annual Usage
Daily kWh consumption × number of days used per year = annual energy
9
So how much energy does it use?
Here’s how to find out.
Daily Usage
(Wattage × Hours Used Per Day) ÷ 1000 = Daily Kilowatt-hour (kWh)
55 X 24 =1320
1320 / 1000 =1.32
Annual Usage
Daily kWh consumption × number of days used per year = annual energy
1.32 x 365 =481.8kWh
10
Let’s discuss how to
read energy guides!
There’s gotta be an easier way!
11
Energy Guides give us an
average amount of energy
used and cost per year.
Calculated based on the average
home. Most refrigerators run
24/7 so this is probably pretty
close to ours.
Calculated based on the average
energy cost. Yours may differ
based on your power company.
