One-Step Linear Equation

A one-step linear equation is an equation that is made up of two

expressions set equal to each other and requires only one

operation to solve a mathematical sentence. A one-step linear

equation is special because it has only one or two variables. The

mathematics of working with variables is called Algebra. In order

to study Algebra and model one-step linear equations, we must

first understand several algebraic vocabulary terms.

Read as: The sum of a number
and seven is equal to fifteen.

Term

A term is a number, variable, product, or quotient in an

expression of sums and/or differences. If we

remove all the operation signs or the equal sign in the

mathematical sentence, the terms are what’s left.

Coefficient

A coefficient is a numerical factor in a term, and is the

number in front of the variable that is used to multiply the

variable by. When the variable does not have a number in

front of it, the coefficient represents 1.
