• Doors should be shut and lock
• The door window should be covered

• What would you do if you are caught in the hallway or restroom when a lock down is
initiated? This could be during the change of class or before/after the school day.
• Immediately look for an open classroom door and enter that classroom, even if it is not your
classroom.
• If you were unable to get into a classroom, hide in the restroom, not visible to anyone who makes
entry. Feet up on toilet and stall door locked.
• Run in a direction away from gunfire to exit the building and continue running until you get to a
safe place, then call 911 to report your location so they can send an officer to you.
• What would you do if you are in the cafeteria, auditorium, gym, field, or stadium when a
lockdown is initiated or when presented with a threat?
• Follow the lead of your teachers for lockdown directions

• Division-wide implementation of Positive Behavioral
Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
• School staff receives safety training each year
• Expectation is that all exterior doors remain closed and
locked at all timed and all classroom doors remain closed and locked at all times while students are present!!!
• School staff can immediately lockdown the school using the
phone system or the NEW App that immediately calls 911 and sends out a school-wide lockdown announcement
• Hard corners or safe spaces designated in each room
• Each school has a threat assessment team who responds to
reports of concerning behaviors or threats, immediately report to school administration or call the police after school hours
• The division has been committed to adding LIFE counselors
to assist with the expansion of mental health supports for
students

Keep Our

• All classroom door locks have been changed to support
automatic locking when pushed closed.
• Unanticipated fire alarms do not cause an automatic
evacuation – wait for the announcement
• Working to expand the number of School Resource Officers
in our schools
• Roanoke County School Resource Officers have keys to
access the buildings as needed
• Local law-enforcement train in our buildings after school
hours to help them become familiar with the layout of our
schools

School Violence?
HELP KEEP ALL EXTERIOR DOORS CLOSED AT ALL TIMES AND CLASSROOM DOORS CLOSED AT ALL TIMES - Do not open any exterior door to let anyone inside the school.
Report concerning behaviors or concerning social media posts to a staff member or administrator(you may remain anonymous)
