AMERICAN
REVOLUTION

Successful insurrection by American Patriots in the 13 colonies to British rule,
resulting in American independence.

British crown brought upon unpopular taxes on the colonies; those of the Stamp
Act of 1765, Townshend Acts of 1767, and most notably the Tea Act of 1773.

Colonials protested against these taxes and the lack of representation in
parliament.

Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence on July
4th, 1776. Had already started in 1775.

Officially ended in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris resulting in the creation of the
United States of America.

These “shots” and revolution were heard around the world ultimately influencing
people around the world to revolt against their monarchs.

So what happened?

Huge royal debts- 7 years War against Britain and aid towards the American
Revolution

The people of France were literally starving. Price of bread had gone up.

Louis XVI called an Estates General meeting to raise taxes for EVERYONE. 1st and 2nd
Estate objected and only proposed raising taxes to the 3rd Estate.

Locked out the 3rd Estate of the meeting, so the 3rd Estate had their own separate
meeting (in a tennis court) and swore to meet until they had drafted a Constitution
and be free.
