Spain gave up Florida on July 17, 1821. In 1824, less than 8,000 Americans lived in Florida.

By 1837 the census showed 48,000 people lived in Florida. Enslaved people made up half the population.

In 1839, delegates approved Florida's first constitution. This document allowed slavery.

Florida became the 27th state on March 3, 1845 when President John Tyler signed the statehood bill.

Mexico gained independence from Spain. Mexico encouraged Americans to settle in Texas. Soon Americans outnumbered Tejanos (Mexican citizens).

Conflict between Americans and Mexico grew violent. In February 1836, the Mexican army attacked a smaller force at the Alamo. People inside were killed.
1835
The Republic of Texas is established under American rule. The government named Sam Houston commander in chief of the Texan forces. A few weeks later a treaty was signed ending the conflict.

Texas elected Sam Houston as president. Houston sent a delegation to Washington D.C. to ask the United States to annex Texas. Andrew Jackson refused the request.

President John Tyler supported Texas annexation. The Senate was divided over the issue of slavery and did not ratify the treaty for annexation.
1841
"Manifest Destiny" was a popular issue during the presidential campaign. The South wanted Texas. The North gained all of Oregon as free territory.
