Objective: Learn strategies that pilots use to plan flights

Navigation & Maps
If you are an English Language Learner, please open a separate tab and use Google Translate to better understand this lesson.
In this activity, you will create a flight plan for a flight that has been chartered to fly to a music festival. As part of the flight plan, you will plan the flight path, or route, for this flight. But before you can do that, you need to learn how to use navigation tools, find locations, and interpret maps.
Before you start creating your flight plan, let’s explore a basic navigation tool—the compass rose. A compass rose is a symbol on a map that shows the cardinal directions of north, south, east, and west. Sometimes the compass rose will display the directions in between the cardinal directions -- northwest, southwest, northeast, and southeast. These are called intermediate directions.
